Our story

It all started in 1989 when the Foster family bought our Sutton and Carshalton shops as a going concern. The Carshalton site had been a bakery since around 1896 and had Victorian brick ovens in the bakehouse. Two generations of Fosters teamed up to build on these historic foundations and eventually expanded the business to include our Cheam and Belmont shops. Whilst the older generation are enjoying a well-earned retirement, all their grandchildren have had a chance to work in the shops, so the future is looking bright – it’s still very much a family affair. In fact, some of our staff have been with us so long that they feel like part of the family too, and some of their children have also come to work for us.

We lost the brick ovens in a fire that devastated the bakehouse in 2014, but the business survived because our bakery family came together and worked hard and, with the support of our customers, rebuilt. We have a shiny new bakehouse now, staffed with a team of bakers who have over 175 years of baking experience between them – so the traditions of the original bakery survive.
